I'm a bit confused by all the information out there about bilingual children - the general (mis)conception is that they generally start talking later than monolingual ones, but i've heard it's actually bollocks. personally, now that i truly understand. Seven stickers = one hot wheels (80 cents at the grocery store, and yes this was a bribe). It involves the precisely coordinated muscle actions of the tongue, lips, jaw, and vocal tract to produce the recognizable sounds that make up language. They also feel it is a direct reflection on their parenting abilities. I was lucky in that i had lots of training in how children learn to talk and read when i trained as a teacher and added to that i had the experience of working with families as a home-tutor and of course with my own kids, when they came along. The first milestones he “missed” were gestures like pointing, clapping, playing “soo big”-type mimicry games, etc. My sister died 44 years ago when i was eight, and i still face this dilema when asked about my siblings and i still feel guilty when i don’t mention her. I do agree that a parents job is to raise a healthy, independent human being.
